Long time no see… how have you been?

Today we’re back with a slightly late report, as a move for this player to a bigger club has been announced in recent days. Izan González, the CE Europa midfielder, has taken a big step forward in his career by signing for Granada CF.

This is a player who caught our eye a long time ago, and with the official announcement now out, it felt like the right moment to finally include him here.

Izan González is a 21-year-old midfielder who came through the CE Cornellà academy. His breakthrough has come this season, during an outstanding loan spell at CE Europa, where his performances attracted the attention of several clubs across Spain. In fact, in recent weeks, there were even rumors linking him with FC Barcelona.

Now that his move to Granada CF is confirmed, it’s time to take a closer look at his strengths and see how he adapts to the challenge of playing in a higher division.

One of a kind: The Midfielder with Three Lungs

Izan is one of those players you love when he’s on your team, and absolutely hate when he’s not. He’s the kind of midfielder that rarely makes headlines, but whose performances are key for a team to function. He does the dirty work, the invisible work, the things that don’t always show up in highlights but win you games over a season.

This season, there were a lot of doubts around CE Europa. The stadium remodel, the lack of heavy investment, and the decision to trust young and relatively unknown players made many people expect a tough year. Instead, things have turned out much better than expected—and Izan has been one of the main reasons why.

His impact goes way beyond numbers. With endless energy and constant movement, he covers almost the entire length of the pitch. He’s always there to help in defense, always ready to show up in midfield, and often the first one to react when the team loses the ball. Thanks to his positioning and work rate, Europa rarely get caught badly on counterattacks, because Izan is usually already running back to fix the problem.

Need someone to recover the ball high up the pitch and put pressure on the opponent? Call Izan.
Need a last-second sprint from one box to the other to stop a dangerous attack? Better hope you’ve got Izan on your side.
Need a player who covers space, closes gaps, and keeps the team balanced for 90 minutes? Yeah… you already know the answer.

I’ll leave below his season’s heat map, you’ll quickly see this is absolutely not normal…

The Big Question: Can he Pull it off in La Liga Hypermotion?

As we’ve already seen, he is an absolute machine in terms of physicality, and what the eye test suggested is now clearly confirmed by the data. Izan is one of the best ball recoverers in the league, averaging 10.7 recoveries per game, the highest figure among all players. On top of that, he is heavily involved in duels, winning 6.9 per game with a 52% success rate, numbers that perfectly reflect his intensity, aggressiveness, and constant presence in midfield battles.

However, for a midfielder, sometimes it takes a bit more than just physical dominance, and that’s where his biggest flaw appears. The big question is: is Izan able to control the tempo of a game, find teammates in dangerous areas through passing, and consistently generate chances? For now, the honest answer is no.

That doesn’t mean he’s poor on the ball. He actually has solid passing ability and is capable of opening the play toward teammates positioned in advantageous zones. Still, when looking at his key passes per game (0.6), it becomes clear that chance creation is not his main strength. The same applies to his ball distribution over longer distances: he averages 2 accurate long balls per game, with a 52% accuracy, which is serviceable but far from outstanding.

Even his overall passing volume reflects this profile. With 30 accurate passes per game, the number feels relatively low for a central midfielder—especially considering he is almost never substituted and plays a full 90 minutes most weeks. All of this points to a player whose main value lies in winning the ball, sustaining the team physically, and maintaining structure, rather than dictating the rhythm or acting as the creative hub of the midfield.

If he takes that step forward and improves in this part of the game, sooner than later we will see him in a first division team in Spain, or maybe another top 5 league. His success will depend on that and whether Granada CF know what they’ve signed, and don’t expect him to do things he isn’t capable of doing while allowing him to do what he shines at.

Player Comparison and Future Expectations

As we can see in the radar plot comparing him to other midfielders from his same league, Izan stands out in distance covered and recoveries, while also being above average in the fourth quartile in duels won and tackles.

However, this confirms that his passing is rather average, and compared to other players, he struggles to find his teammates in situations where they are able to shoot.

Note that, due to his height, he isn’t a great aerial duel winner either.

Bearing in mind he has just recently moved to a new club, there isn’t much of a decision to make right now apart from hoping he does well in Spain’s second division and continues his upward path. That said, the context around his contract is important. Since he is on loan and his deal expires in the summer of 2027, he would soon be entering the last year of his contract, which instantly makes him a very attractive option for many La Liga teams looking for value and reliability.

If we look at realistic fits, Getafe stands out as the most logical one. Their football isn’t always the prettiest to watch, but they absolutely love this type of midfielder: intense, physical, aggressive, and willing to do the dirty work. On top of that, they already have players like Luis Milla to take care of the passing and tempo, which would allow Izan to focus on what he does best without forcing him into a role that doesn’t fully suit his profile.

Looking at the bigger picture, though, Real Betis would be the dream move. They clearly lack a midfielder with his level of physicality and defensive presence, and surrounding Izan with technically gifted players could help him grow his passing game naturally. It would also mean much more exposure, European football, and a context that could really push his development to the next level.

Here is my prediction for his potential trajectory:

Best-Case Scenario
Conor Gallagher — I mean, even the hairstyle looks similar… Same type of player: a pure pitbull, full of intensity and strength, relentless in pressing and duels. He lacks the calmness and passing range to control games, but as a destructor rather than a constructor, he has still managed to play at the top level for several elite clubs in Europe.

Expected Outcome
Joelinton — A very similar profile to Gallagher, but slightly below in terms of ceiling. Extremely intense, physically dominant, and strong in duels. He also adds value going forward, arriving into the box and scoring goals, and has established himself as a key starter for a top team in his league.

Worst-Case Scenario
Mauro Arambarri — A high-intensity midfielder built for demanding teams. A true club warrior, capable of playing wherever the coach needs him. While not flashy, he brings balance, effort, and tactical discipline, and can even take on more attacking responsibilities, contributing with goals when required.
