You know already… here we are once again with another discovery, a star on the rise, and once again a La Liga Hypermotion player. This league is amazing, and this is just another prove of it.

Today, we have a master at his work, one of those players for which the sentence “You see the game you don’t see him, you look at him you see the whole game” applies: Beñat Gerenabarrena.

Beñat Gerenabarrena is a Athletic Club player who is currently on loan at CD Castellón, where he moved in order to get some minutes and is shining now. In the future, when some new section open up in this website, we will talk about how CD Castellón scouts players and finds truly hidden talent, but today our focus remains solely on Beñat Gerenabarrena, as he deserves no less.

His profile, to get a first picture of what we will be reviewing today, is similar to the #04 scouted player: Izan Gonzalez.

An unseen star: the definition of doing the dirty work

This season, CD Castellón have emerged as one of the standout teams in the league, currently sitting comfortably in first place. Their rise, however, was far from straightforward. After a difficult opening to the campaign, failing to register a single win in their first five matches, the club made a decisive change. The manager was dismissed, and Pablo Hernández—a club legend and former Leeds United icon—was appointed. His arrival proved to be a turning point, bringing clarity, confidence, and a renewed sense of identity to the squad.

Beyond the managerial shift, another key development has defined Castellón’s season: the evolution of Beñat Gerenabarrena. As the team stabilized and adapted to the new tactical demands and competitive level, Beñat began to consolidate his role, growing in confidence and responsibility. The result has been a remarkable surge in performance, to the point where he has established himself as one of the best, if not the best, box-to-box midfielders in the league.

Castellón are a side committed to possession-based football, often attacking with a high number of players and committing bodies forward. This approach naturally leaves space to exploit in defensive transitions, and it is precisely in this context where Beñat’s importance becomes most evident. He functions as the team’s defensive anchor, acting as the reference point when possession is lost. Thanks to his excellent positioning, awareness, and reading of danger, he consistently identifies critical spaces, covers exposed zones, anticipates opposition actions, and recovers the ball in high-risk situations.

In Spanish football terms, Beñat Gerenabarrena is the archetypal “perro de presa”: a player who never stops running, presses relentlessly, wins duels, and constantly covers his teammates’ backs. His physical output and intensity provide balance to an otherwise attack-heavy structure, allowing others to play with freedom.

Importantly, his game is not limited to defensive work. Beñat Gerenabarrena is also technically secure enough to distribute the balland contribute to build-up and progression when required. While Castellón’s attacking focus tends to flow through their dangerous wide players and Calatrava, Beñat offers a reliable supporting presence. Additionally, he has chipped in with important goals, demonstrating his ability to arrive in the box and pose an offensive threat when situations demand it.

Does this man have any flaw?!

Yeah… as what happened with Mika Godts a few analysis earlier, there is no clear aspect of the game that Beñat Gerenabarrena needs to improve at. Nice passing, amazing defending and physicality, an okay dribbling, good positioning and awareness, almost no errors, can attack and occupy the box…

Stats indicate there are no flaws in his game, and when seeing him play live, you get that same feeling. Sooo, in this section, we will suggest some areas he can improve at in order to be not just a very good box to box midfielder, but an excepcional one.

The main one that would make him the most complete midfielder of the league would be  his passing. His vision, although consistent, is by no means elite, and if he got a bit better at that and could be the main ball distributor of his team consistently… well I can’t imagine what kind of machine we would be talking about.

Another point he could maybe improve at is his shooting. For a midfielder like him, having a strong and reliable long shot would be the cherry on top of the cake.

Summary

Strengths:

  • Work Rate
  • Positioning and awareness
  • Defending, intercepting and covering offensive players
  • Duel winner

Weaknesses:

  • None?
  • (Maybe improve his ball distribution and vision to make him stand out from other same profile midfielders)
  • (For that same reason, improve his long shots)

Player Comparison and Future Expectations

As for what I expect from him in the future, there are two main pathways I can see him take right now:

  1. If CD Castellón ascend to La Liga, I can see Beñat Gerenabarrena joining them on a permanent contract, especially since he would enter his last year of contract, meaning he would be cheaper to get. Then, I see him staying there and making himself a name in Spain’s first division, and after some seasons, earning a spot in a better team
  2. Since Athletic Club are ass this season, some significant squad changes could be on their way. Beñat is on loan, he could return there, and he has little to no competition in his position, since only Mikel Jaureguizar and Íñigo Ruiz de Galarreta would be ahead of him, the latter pushing 33 years. I can see him staying, being relevant next season as a rotation player and earning the coach’s confidence to get a starter role in 2-3 seasons at max.

To contextualize his potential, here are some expected outcomes for him:

Best-Case Scenario
Connor Gallagher — The definition of box to box. Always running, pressing, defending, covering his team mates and attacking when he sees the possibility to do so.

Expected Outcome
Pierre-Emile Hojberg— Again, a great box to box, this time with a bit of a better passing but less reliable and determinant. He can either be the best or the worst in the pitch, but he always puts in the effort.

Worst-Case Scenario
Samú Costa— A mid table team box to box, who is a key player for the team’s success and is valued and known by all the league followers. Misses some passes, some shots, and sometimes is too aggressive, but his intensity is non-negotiable.
